Lots of questions are swirling over the back end of our line-up. Whether that is a player on the roster, would the player be called up, or would it be a new face? My question, would Gagne be a good addition to the Flyers lineup? In one word, my thoughts are, yes. Obviously there are a lot of factors that weigh in on both sides, but I think we balancing out the pros and the cons, having him here is much more beneficial than not. I am sure you have heard, but Holmgren has been kicking the tires on invite Simon to camp. Check out our article covering that HERE.
Simon is a respected player throughout the locker room and the fan base. He is a player that works his hardest every shift, has that veteran leadership, and plays every aspect of the game. A strong penalty killer that knows what is expected of him in Philadelphia, Gagne understands that his skills are diminishing with his age. Combine that with being injury prone, and he could be had for a low risk, low cost roster spot. Also, if the Flyers do not feel they have that 3rd line winger on this roster, he is the right player for 14 minutes a game, if that wouldn't be slowing down the progression of a younger player and a similar skill set.
What more do you want from a guy then hearing him say he wants to be a Flyer? He even said he would take less to play here. If the fan base didn't love him before, hearing those words after Philadelphia gets trashed nationally should make them swoon. I have been going to Flyers games my entire life, and I have seen a lot of big games and big goals. I do not remember a time that the Flyers home ice roared as loud as it did, when Gagne scored his 1st goal back in the orange and black. This city loves him, he loves the city.
By no means am I implying that Flyers should get in a bidding war for his services. In my own mind, I have a number that I do not want them to exceed. But if it is 1 year deal, and the Flyers have the money to spend after other roster moves, then they should bring him back. Also, this is predicated on the youth not being able to handle the spot. There are a lot of names floating around on who can earn the 3rd line winger role, and in my opinion, the best man should earn the job. There are many aspects to a hockey game, several of them you can teach. You cannot teach someone to play their hardest, to be a leader, or to have veteran experience.

That is my belief too, with a reasonable hit, he should always have a place on the team.
